There are several areas in which citizens can assist the court as volunteers: CASA: Court Appointed Special Advocates are volunteers who provide a voice for abused, abandoned and neglected children by speaking with the child and relaying the information learned to the court. CPR: Child Placement Review Child Placement Review (CPR) is a legislatively-mandated volunteer program of the Family Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey. CPR is seeking concerned citizens from the community to participate on its review boards. Volunteers are responsible for reviewing the cases of children placed in foster care by the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS). Board members review the DYFS case plan and make recommendations to the judge. The goal of the program is to assist the court in ensuring that out of home placement serves the best interest of the child. JATPP: The Juvenile Auto Theft Prevention Programs uses community interest groups and volunteers to educate first time juvenile offenders arrested for auto theft. Its aim is to prevent further auto thefts and other delinquent behavior. JCC: Juvenile Conference Committees need volunteers to hold informal hearings on complaints against juveniles with the goal of preventing future misconduct. SVP: The Supervised Visitation Program enables non-custodial parents to visit their children in a structured setting when the court deems such an arrangement necessary. Volunteers assist court staff in the monitoring of the visits.

Patient/Family Volunteer-- Some Volunteers mainly assist our families by providing respite support— “a short interval of rest,” as the dictionary writes. These Volunteers go into the patient’s home to stay with the patient, allowing the family members an opportunity to take a break—about 3 hours—where they can focus on themselves: sometimes to seek medical attention for themselves, sometimes to continue a favorite activity and sometimes to just indulge in a meal or movie with friends. Another way that Volunteers can support families is by helping with the weekly shopping. Nursing home patients often need Volunteers to come in just to visit, breaking-up the monotony of their institutionalized day, other times they may be needed to assist them with their meals or some other specific activity. Family members, too, need someone to talk to, to discuss their situation: the changes and losses they’re experiencing. And that is what Volunteers do most of all. Regardless if you’re dropping off groceries or you’re spending the afternoon, volunteers give patients and their caregivers the opportunity to be heard. Volunteers are the members of the team that have the time to listen. That is the gift that you bring and why volunteers are considered the heart of hospice.

That is the gift that you bring and why volunteers are considered the heart of hospice. Before you can become involved with any patient/family activity, a Basic Hospice Volunteer Training Program must be completed—a 12 hour program. This program will introduce you to hospice philosophy, techniques to use on your visits and details on our policies. Usually classes are held in spring and fall, but additional classes will be scheduled as needed. As you contact us, we’ll inform you of the next training opportunities. However, please remember that though our service area is large, including all of Essex, Morris, Union and Monmouth Counties, as well as the bordering towns of the neighboring counties, you will only volunteer where you are willing to go. Most volunteers support families in their backyard. Since our West Orange office is in the center of our service area, we host most of our meetings there, as it is, on average, the most convenient location for everyone.
